How well are larger mid-bass/range drivers for HT/Stereo use? Just trying to find something to match good with horns and that will play up high.

Just like a car builds and everything factor into it. JimJ would probably know best. But there isn't anything wrong at all using larger drivers for midbass. But why do you want 12" woofer for midbass anyways?

Usually they use smaller diamiter drivers for mid bass due to the MM of a larger driver the Q can be affected.I wouldn't go any larger than a 10" for mid bass.

What is the box size you are looking at and what is the horn?

Box size isn't too limited it will be in a tower... so yea..

I would not use a pro sound woofer for HT/stereo use, but a good old fashoined 10 or 12" woofer certainly has its place in a well designed hifi system. If you chamber the woofer properly, you can get musical low frequency extension down to the mid 20's or low 30's without the need for a subwoofer.

If you use a 10-12 as a "mid-bass", you'll still need a good midrange as most tweeters won't play low enough to match most 10-12" woofers. Using a midrange you'll also be able to choose a good tweeter without worrying about low Fs, which frees up many good options. The downside of course is 3-way crossover and speaker design which can be tricky.

The other option is to mate the woofer with an extended range driver that plays all the way up to 20000 hz. With this route you'll be able to use simple 1st order slopes on the crossover but the downside is that extended range drivers tend to have relatively low power handling.

^^^ That's the reason I matched the too.. the Horns can play from 2khz (wouldn't want them that low anyways) up to 20khz... and the mids claimed up to 5kw.. And want horns for loudness.. these will be for partys and what not as well as just everyday use.

The two drivers you picked aren't "mids". They are WOOFERS. They aren't really designed to play past 1000 and that's usually pushing it with woofers this big.

if you want loud for partys, do like dual 6.5, for mids, then like a 15" woofer, some bullet tweeters. look in the projects section at partsexpress

If you are new to home audio and crossover design is quite complex and you can really learn a lot just by building someone else's project that has been tested. It sounds like you want something that can be cranked up pretty high for parties and what not but still sound good for music or HT use. Why don't you try building something like this for your first project:

This the the "Magna *** Laude" in the projects section and it includes cabinet and crossover plans. Should play LOUD and sound good doing it too. those things outta have plenty of bass by themselves, the box it tuned in the low 30's iirc
