can anyone help me find info on building car tube amplifiers? i know the basics of tube amps and any scematics links or ideas will help. i want to build a small amp just basicaly for looks, before i invest money to make a good one.i have a a lot of tubes and componets to work with.

just an idea.... i once took a tube radio and removed the amp from the radio and just used the amp, i used the phono input. if i were to find an old car tube radio i probally could do the same, but how could i input sound?

You have a lot of tubes? Any you want to sell? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif If you've got some EL84's, 6DJ8's, 5U4G rectifiers or 6DJ8 triodes, I'd be very interested //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Anyway...back to your original question. Most car tube drivers (like Butler or USAmps) use tubes in their preamp stages, but the power amplifier is still solid state. True Class A tube amps are very rare in-vehicle, simply because of the impedance issues and power requirements.

ok yeah iwas going the amp as a pre-amp. i have EL84's and 5U4G rectifiers but used and not matched pairs. most of the tubes i have came out of old 5 tube amps, just sold my heathkit w6m, kind of wish i didnt it was the coolest damm tube amp ive ever seen, needed to pay the bills tho. back to the question well am i better off using a power inverter on a tube amp or building one with a 12v power supply. i want to build one simple and ellegant basically just for the look, tube mounted in the dash look sweet.

Power inverters will introduce noise into your signal, as most of them are squarewave generators instead of a pure sinewave...if you're serious about this project, I would take a close look at Butler Audio tube drivers or US Amps and see how they do it.
