Will leaving my cheap factory speakers in the rear ruin my sound if I get new front component speakers and a decent head unit?

r u amping the new fronts? anyway just fade u'r new hu to the front to eliminate most of the rears output. they won't ruin the sound that way and still leave you with some rear fill.

Doubtful..

most of the information i've picked up from "expert" sources says that if I'm on a tight budget, a nice head unit and good front speakers will be fine without an amp. Amp comes next, then sub etc.

The HU i'm going to buy is 60 X 4... which seems like more than enough for starters, since I won't have a sub seperate from my components.

not to be rude but.....

no hu puts out 60 watts. they may rate that but most likely it's going to be about 15 - 17 watts rms, which is plenty but.......

no hu amp is that great when it comes to distortion. if you are going to factory's off a head unit that's "high" power be careful how loud you play it. the power isn't going to kill them( some factory's can handle 100wrms if the power is "clean") the distortion is. refrain from CONSTANT loud. and you'll be fine.

I have infinity 4's for my front, and factory for the back, I basically turned the volume up with the fade on rear, and figured out about what volume they distort, and based by that I figured about how much I needed to fade. The infinitys are so loud I wouldn't be able to hear any distortion out of the back speakers anyway. Just have them back there, because it would look a little odd w/o them. So, you shouldn't have any problems.

Please explain why it will only put out 15-17, and why they bother to rate it so high if it doesn't actually do anything.

I don't plan on blasting anyone's ears out... my hearing is still good.

Hey, if your not goin to amp them just be care not to buy a comp. system that is rated to to much power. They have some that ruin really well off lower amounts of power and it would be better to find even a lil cheaper set of rear speakers. Otherwise there wont be much rear fill or they will be totally drownd out if you have subs back there. Or if you havent put subs it wont be that big of a deal but when or if you do make sure you put something back there or it will sound lopside. It happened to my friend and it sure doesnt sound good.

Head units are rated in terms of peak power output- this looks impressive on the box and in the specs, however the typical continuous or useable rating usually does not exceed 25 watts per channel.
