Hz Questions

I have had numerous systems in quite a few cars mostly for sq though. I have been reading threads where you guys are saying "I have 2 ***** 12" in a ported box tuned to **Hz. Now my question is are you talking about the box being tune to a certain Hz or the amp? I want to build a box that I can take in and out of my car for either one 12" or one 10" buy just want it for spl. I know I need to figure out what sub and then go by those specs for the box, but how do I tune a box to certain Hz if this is the case?

Thanks for any help in advance guys.

Jason

EDIT: feel free to contact me on AIM also Jasonrussell04

They are talking about the port on the box. Its the hertz that the box plays its resonant frequency.

Ok cool. Now... how do I determain the size of the port in relation to Hz? Or will that all come with the spec sheet? I want the biggest bang I can get out of the subs. I hope it isnt some big math equation cause I **** at math!

As for determining port frequencies, I am lost(i am a sealed junkie), but I do know It will take simple geometry.

here is a great website. First, you need to figure your internal volume of the enclosure in question, figure what frequency you want, and here is a website that has some great info on determining this. You can do a slot port, or a simplier round port...play with it...you'll see it.

here it is

Nice wedsite polecat. Thanks guys I think Ill be able to figure somthing out. Im just used to building seald boxes, much easier...lol.
no problem sealed boxes are easier, yet quiter. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

yes, if done to spescs...I've seen many, not follwed the manufactures recommendations, and sounds like //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

That's your opinion. Sealed setups have greater potential for MORE distortion bcuz of the increased excursion at high output levels.
not really 'opinion per 'se, but fact...I've been around this stuff long enough to have seen some pretty crappy sealed enviroments.

And why would you have higher excursion in a sealed box over a ported one???

Over excursion is from several factors, just because a woofer is sealed, doesn't automatically assume it will sound better and cleaner over a ported enclosure.

I hear ya,

But what I mean is, for the sealed to be anywhere close to a match for the vented in terms of loudness, the sealed woofer would have to move much further than the vented woofer to achieve the same output. Atleast I think so. And a sub excurting (is that a word, lol) to/or near it's limits will, or probably will, have more distortion. While the vented woofer, not having to move as far, has the potential, IMO, to sound "cleaner". Bcuz it can be as loud OR louder than the sealed with significantly less excursion.

I think thats right //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
