A good sub, is a good sub. I have a hard time making the distinction between a good "ht" sub and a good "music" sub. If you select the proper driver that can extend low in large tuned enlcosures without producing anomolies, then why wouldn't it work for music as well as movies? Also with processing, you can always give it a boost in that frequency range if you find it lacking.
Right now on the AVS forum, there is a comedy debate with the 'gurus'//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif of subwoofer and they want single digit hertz playback,
that ported boxes will have issues down low vs. woofer modeling claims.
People are finding very low frequency content on recordings, some stuff near
1 hz and they assume it was recorded this way on purpose, therefore your
audio system should playback that stuff. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
I pretty much know what they are debating about, it's comedy really. There are
some clues that the material recorded that far low is not really put there on
purpose by the studios, it could be artifacts. If so, where do they come from?
I offered a silly suggestion that nobody looked at. Special effects are usually
real live recordings of 'stuff' and when that sound is altered in the studio,
they probably don't filter out the very low frequency garbage and it makes its
way into the final recording. Wind blowing on the microphone may cause VLF,
who knows. One guy emailed a studio and the guy said that if you find
stuff
This came about because the fan sub is rated down to 1hz and the few people
that auditioned the sub claim there is a perception down low. One guy how
just finished his uber HT theater tried to get that fan sub installed but his
HT room was too small to qualify for an install. It cost $25k to get the fan sub.
One camp claims that you should try to go to 'DC' on playback and ported
boxes just won't work well. You have port issues down low and what not.
The other camp says 'Fvck that', sacrifice the VLF and gain more SPL in
the higher bass region with ported designs because that VLF material
is just 'junk'.
There is also an argument that certain music instruments measured, go down low.
