how can you tell if sub is clipping

Irratic sub behavior. Lots of uncontrolled movement.

The JLAudio web site has good info on how to adjust amplifiers to get maximum sound without alot of distortion. Basically tells you how to set your gains - by using an ohm meter. Pretty interesting. After reading that - its pretty obvious that technology has come a long way.

hmm that's not too clear...i mean i get distortion...but its more of like the bass notes hitting door...and making that sound...its a metal sound so its not speaker itself

What does that have to do with technology ? It's ohm's law :p
Power = VoltagexVoltage/Resistance

For the 500/1, you want a voltage of 27.4 volts @ 1.5 ohms ...

27.4*27.4/1.5 = 500.5067 watts

I ment that back in the day - you just wired it and played it. Now its more technical to hang with the big dogs.
