How Can You Tell If Sound Is Clipping/Distorting?

When I adjust the gain on my amp for the sub I can turn it to max and it just sounds really loud. I'm not really sure at what point it starts to distort. I guess my question is if everything sounds clear and ok does that mean it is? As long as distortion is inaudible at loud volumes does that mean the gains/settings are good?
