I think I have decided that I want two of these MTX 15's. The power peak is 500 watts. I plan on hooking these up in a 96' Ford Explorer. I am a girl and I do not understand some of these things. Because sometimes I wonder if my friends (guys) even know what they are talking about, so I am trying to do the research on my own. I plan on ordering them from Crutchfield. Here are the stats for them:

MTX Thunder4000 15'

Power Range (watts RMS): 50-250

Peak Power (watts): 500

Freq. Range (Hz): 27-150

Imp. (ohm): 4

SPL (dB): 91.6

I want something that is going to be loud enough for other people to hear outside of my car. I think at school my ex, and a bunch of his friends have fell into a competition of systems. LOL. But I do not want something that I am going to have to wear ear plugs in either. I just want something that will THUMP. My dad plans on building me a box. All I need to know is what wattage amp should I hook up to these things and will these be okay subs for a 96' Explorer? Also if these are going to make my back hatch rattle I would like to know what I can do ( and no I am not going to have someone weld it shut ) to keep it from rattling. LOL I am so clueless.

Thanks for your help,

In all honesty if you just want something that will thump, go with 10 or 12 inch speakers. The disadvantages of 15 inch is that they aren't very efficient (they need a lot of power) They take up a lot of room , and you could get more with less. A lot of people will tell you that you need something they want, but that may not be good for your needs. If you listen to different types of music as well as bass10 or 12 inch are what I recommend. 10 inch are the most efficient usually, and 12 inch give you a little lower bass than10's. If you gave me some more info, I might be able to better figure what you need. Deffinitely save the money you'd spend on 15's for more amp power. Power, and especially box design are most important. The box can make or break a woofer. be sure you build it to the recommended airspace. I could go on forever with recommendations so give me some input on what you are lookin for. My personal e mail is gregj9@hotmail.com I used to work in car stereo in a store in Florida for 7 years, just so you know I do know what I am talking about

my friend has an explorer, and hes got 1 kicker L7 solobaric 12, with a 350 watt mono sub kicker amp with it, and it pounds. and it takes up hardly n e space, i highly recommend it, it hits twice as hard as my 2 10's.

First off, and not to sound like a dad, but this is important---> Your system is for your enjoyment in your vehicle. Read that exactly how it is written. The people who constantly drive arround blaring loud stereos are the ones who do more damage to this sport than anything.

While it sounds as if I am lecturing, several years as an active competitor have proven this point true many a time. Not everyone wants to hear your system, and it is thier right not to.

Ok, enough fire and brimstone- even with the above in mind we can still piece together a very impressive sound system with plenty of kick. You have a decent start in your choices, so obviously you have done a little homework.

Only really need one more tid bit of info to help you on your way.

This is the tough part----->

What kind of music do you listen to most?

Take it easy,

-zane

Rap is what I mostly listen to. And I am sorry if they don't want to hear it then that is their problem, I could really care less... Sorry //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

how can it be their problem if they hear your music? huh? You are the one out there blaring your stereo so you can be "noticed". Well a system isnt everything as far as having a car... But to go up and down the street pounding your system is a good way to get your neighbors ticked off and b4 yah know it the cops called because of the "noise". I couldn't agree more with what Zane posted, and it is totaly the TRUTH. Now sure you can put those 15's in your Explorer and pound the pavement, but what about the rest of the music? You turn up the dial and all you hear is the bass...whats the point? With rap its not just the bass line that your listening to, its the words, and that follows with any music. And your inconsideration for the rest of the world really shows maturity. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif If you really really want to get the world to notice you get yourself some Mobile Authority 15's and get a top of the line Pyramid amp, you will amazed at what you get, you will be pounding the pavement b4 yah know it.

If u are getting 15s and the peak is only 500 go with somthing els.MTX is a good choic but u said u want some seariac thump.then u better not get 400 searis.I wuld sudgest 600 or 800 searis. But u better tack some time on this.and have it instaled fo u,by a pro.But if u want some searias thump i recomend a pair or rockford fosgats or eclips. Good luck, and i hope u find what u are looking for

Ummm, I live in Alabama... LOL in the middle of no where next to Columbus, GA, you know near the second largest military installation in the U.S., We do not have a noise ordinance thingy here and my nearest neighbor is like 10 miles away...... Which is something I am not use to seeing as how I use to live in Atlanta. Well anyway...... Also you do not have to hook your amp up to your factory speakers... I planned on just hooking it up to my subs... I wasn't trying to be ugly. I just do not really care, I know what I want to do I can always take it out if I want to. No BIG deal. So why does it matter? I am not easy to convince not to do somehting once I have my mind set on it... Sorry guys!

:p

I certainly wouldn't try to turn you away from doing what you want, I don't know about the rest of the guys but I am only tryin to save you some money........maybe redirect some funds toward equipment you would need to have it sound better.........That is why I suggested putting 10's or 12's in. You said in your last post that you weren't gonna run an amp on your mids/highs. I just wanted to mention .....If you don't run an amp on the other speakers (weather they are stock or not) you won't hear them very well once you have the bass kickin'. It is almost like a guy who works out all the time, but only upper body......looks funny with those skinny legs. Well that is how all that power on the subs is gonna "sound" with no power on the mids and highs.....

I like Rockford because they have lasted me the longest and they sound realy good how about the rest of you whats you favorite kind of speaker? If I were you I would go with 2 Rockford 10s or 2 12s and I would listen to gregj9 he sounds corect. But Rockford are pritty expesive also. Good Luck!

In my opinion, MTX *****, they sound sloppy if you get anything over a 10". And peak power is not a way to tell if it sounds good, you can amp it up to a million watts and it can still sound like ****. The only way to tell is to listen to the subs in your car.

i would rather get 2 10's or 2 12's, and a brand other than mtx. two 15's putting out 250 watts rms each just doesnt sound right to me. you'd be better off getting one 12 inch jlw3, or fosgate he2, they seem to be in the ballpark price range of what u are going to spend on the mtx's. if u want to fork over a bit extra money, go for a fosgate hx2, thats a 500 watt woofer right there, and more reliable than a mtx4000 thunder. i'd rather have 1 good sub than 2 or 3 crappy ones.
