Frustrated Newbie!!!

I've been trying to learn a lot about car audio now for about 3 weeks. Basically I want to know for myself that I've made good purchases for what I need/want. I just found this site about 1 week ago and it seems that there is a lot of knowledgable people here. The problem is that I am still confused as hell.

Originally I was going to buy all Fosgate stuff. I was about to order four 6x8 (Ford) 3-way door speakers, one 10" HX2, a 551X 4CH, and a 501BD mono. Is this decent quality stuff or what?

Then I found this site and started hearing about SPL and SQ... what's the difference? I also read that there's different setups for competitions vs. daily drivers. I would think that what wins competitions is the best for everything. I also have been seeing a ton of RE brand subs on this site which I never heard of and from what I read here from some people they are great... others don't think so.

What I have is a 2004 F150 extended cab. I don't want to loose any seating so I have room for either two 8's or one 10. Choosing two 8's or one 10 and exactly which ones is frustrating me. Obviously I don't want to enter any competitions. I just want the best sound system for my budget that gets LOUD with hard hitting low bass but don't want any distortion or loss of sound quality. I'm willing to spend upto $600 for an amp and sub(s). If I choose one 10 I will be either making my own box or buying a 1.0 cu.ft. ported box tuned to 45Hz. If I go with two 8's I'll have to build... which isn't a problem; I own all the tools required to build one the right way.

* The maximum mounting depth I have for the subs is 5 1/2"... I may be able to squeeze upto 5 3/4 if I need to.

Any help or recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You should really listen to some stuff. Everyone here will only list opinions, some people i think have better opinions based on their experience. I would say without breaking the bank and great quality, go for a JL audio 8w6 sealed. I think i've seen em for less than 200 new at some online shops, i dont really recall. Look for an amp that matches it's RMS rating, i don't know it off the top of my head. http://www.jlaudio.com can help you. Also read up on the tutorials there, also http://www.bcae1.com is a great place for info. Good luck

8w6 is only 4.5" deep, requires .375 cubic ft for sealed, anway here's the link

The people that think RE is not that good have proberly never tried them or heard them. You sound just like me when I decided to upgrade my system in my truck. I was going all RF or Rockford too, all stuff I had either seen, heard or knew of. After reading on these forums I decided to try the REs. I can tell you that they are everything good you read about here. Best part is how little they cost. Is there better out there. Yes, but for the price you cannot get better. And don't think that you would be settling because of the price. These are damm good subs. I have an 04 F-150 and 2 RE8s that fit great under my rear seat. They hit hard, loud and sound great. I built my own ported box and did my own install. Look for pictures below and let me know if you need any help or have any questions.

Hey Rich, read my response to your other post to me.

I guess nobody here can help. Either that or they just don't want to.
I have two jobs plus school to worry about and I cannot always check every online forum every single day and read every single post on every single forum every single day. I would imagine a lot of other people are in the same boat. So please don't be offended if your thread does not get 20 replies in 2 minutes. Sorry I don't mean to lash out or anything but it seems I see this in every thread. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Now on to your system. An RE SE 10" would be a great choice for it, but I would go for the recommended RE box, 1.5 cf tuned to ~32 Hz. If that is too much space, go with a sealed box instead. 2 of the 8's would also be good, in 1 cf you should have enough room to port 2 of them. Run these setups off about 500W RMS, that RF amp you suggested would be fine.

As for speakers, you may want to check out a component system. This is a system that has a seperate woofer, tweeter, and a crossover to send the right sounds to the right drivers. What size do you need? There are plenty of nice ones on ebay ranging from $100 to $1000. And with a nice component set and an amplifier to send some power to it, you won't need rear speakers as these will be loud and clear enough. I would stay away from Rockford's speakers, I just don't like the way they sound. Listen to them though and make the call. I like Infinity's for budget sets, the Reference components should be available for around $100.

For an amp, any amp that puts around 50-75 watts RMS out should be fine for those components.

Sorry. I understand everyones situation, but my post was already 3 pages back with no replies so I figured by that time nobody would check that far back to ever reply to it.

Thanks for your response.

Whout would the sound difference be between a RE SE 10 and 2 RE8's?

What is your opinion on oval door speakers in general vs. round? I found some JL Ford sized (6x8) components i'm considering.

JL Component 6x8's on ebay.

Thanks,

Rich
