Formatting a CD in Windows

This is driving me nuts. I want to burn some music files onto a standard DVD+RW Memorex disc. My Win 10 PC acknowledges the CD but says it's not formatted. No format option is available with a right click. From the command prompt, format says the CD is write protected and can't be formatted. WTF? It's a fresh disc from the box, never used. How do I overcome the write protect and get this thing formatted for some old MP3's?

It sounds frustrating to deal with this issue. You might need to check the disc's write protection settings or try using a different program to manage the disc.

You want to burn a DVD rewritable as a music CD? That's a non-starter for many reasons.
What exactly are you planning to use the disc for? Sharing that may help you get some good advice here.

I often was frustrated at the lack of options Windows offered when burning disc. I always used some version of Nero to burn CD's, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RW. There are ways to obtain them for free of course. Here is a start...

My intent is to write some MP3's to disk so I can listen to them in the stock 6 disk changer in my 2010 Cadillac. It actually works very well for what it is.

The problem seems to be associated with my desktop Win 10 PC. I bought some CD RW disks and they behave exactly the same way. Yet I put them in another PC (my work laptop) and they formatted fine. I can read them with the desktop, but cant write to them. I can write them if I use an external USB CD drive, but not with the one built in. Very strange.

I've been through every option offered by Google AI to remove the read only attribute to no avail. The HU will eventually be replaced but it's nice to have some of my favorite tunes at hand.

why are you formatting the cds? load the music into itunes, create a playlist and burn it to the disc
