If you have two 12's sealed, getting xxx watts total, vs. one 12" ported, getting the same power, they will be about the same db.

r u sure about that, i would assume 2 10s = more cone area therefore louder even though the 12 is ported.

If you have one sub with x amount of power, and you keep the power the same and add a second sub, you gain approx. 3db. If you have a sealed sub and you simply put it in the correct ported box, you can also gain about 3db.

So, if you are comparing 2 sealed xxx watt subs getting xxx watts EACH, then the sealed might be louder. If you are comparing two sealed xxx watt subs getting xxx watts TOTAL, then the single ported sub will be louder. Either way, barely noticeable, unless you're on a mic.

Another thing to mention, is that many brands that offer 10 and 12" subs... the 10" subs have a smaller XMAX, which will contribute to the reason that I'm saying a single ported 12" can be louder.

the first statement is false....the second depends

i have actually tried the dual-vs-single with same amount of power.......only difference was about 1 dB with duals.....not 3 dB.....

just putting a sub in ported box will not give an automatic increase of 3 dB across the entire bass range......what it if is tuned for a maximally-flat alignment? no increase there........and usually when the bass peaks it does so over a small range of frequencies.........anyone can see this if they know how to use a box program like bass Box, or WinISD Pro

not true. from my pg ti owners manual a 10" dvc has 36.2mm p-p xmax.

12" dvc has 35 mm p-p xmax. not a huge difference but there is one.

Way too many variables to even begin to make an assumption. 2 10's is theoretically equilvelent to 1.5 12's. That being said, assuming the only difference in the 10's and 12's is the cone area (same Q, Xmax, etc...) the 12 would be louder even in a sealed alignment if the two systems were getting the same power total. 2 10's getting 500W (250 each) is about the same as 1 10 getting 500W. A 12 getting 500W will be louder by virtue of the increased cone area though the difference would be barely audible. Port the 12 and in the frequency range 30-50 Hz there will be a noticable difference.

Of course the above situation is impossible, but in theory it would hold true.
