Deck adapter construction

I want to make a custom deck adapter (box?) for my deck/line driver. I bought some vinyl to cover it and was planning on making it out of mdf but I think mdf might be too thick. What material should I make it out of?

you can still use mdf. my local hardware store has 1/8" and 1/4" mdf.
