Do you have to set up the account to use the software? I was thinking once I DRM stripped these songs, I could drag and drop them on to the iPod. Even if I had to use iTunes proprietary software, I didn't think I needed a CC number.

There are better choices for software to use rather than Itunes.

I am pretty sure you do not. I recall going through setting up the account, but then I am 99% sure I aborted the mission and went out and bought a GC.

I will not give apple my CC number. If it requires I set up an itunes account to use the software, then I will go out and buy the cheapest one I can. I will continue using Zune as my source for musics. It suits me just fine.

No you don't have to give apple your cc to use itunes software. No you don't need itunes to manage your iPod. There are a few alternatives and some are free. The one I use was not free. I paid $30 for it. It basically makes a windows explorer environment to manage the ipod via drag and drop. I personally hate itunes. It is quirky and slow.
