You are supposedly still dependent on your parents until you are 25, at least that is what financial aid at LSU told me. And that is regardless if you claim yourself or not.

Im pretty sure its 25.

But from what I have noticed financial aid is being effected quite adversely by the credit crunch. I know at least a couple people that even had it in the past and are now being denied.

In my particular program going to the financial aid office was not an option because I would've been 1-2 credits short of being a full time student. And VCU has a policy against offering aid to part time students.

There is a fafsa form that is filled out every year for college students to determine how much a family can conceivably afford and what aid can be given. My parents claimed me on their taxes last year so I was s.o.l. If one is legally an independent then that can be avoided. I forget what the age is that you are legally considered independent though.
