im pretty much trying to hide my computer from the school tech department

Well this won't do it. You are inside their network so nothing will hide you from them, but this will mask where you are going outside of their network(internet).

ok well answer this... every time i get onto a network on campus i have to sign into the schools antivirus software... even if i was using a proxy wouldnt they be able to see where i signed in?

They can't scan what you have on your PC. They can get your IP, because it is their network. They can also sniff the traffic going to your PC to determine what is being sent as it is sent to your PC. With TOR, it is encrypted data with multiple origins, so the data is masked from monitoring. They won't know what kind of data is going to you.

TOR is your answer. It can be used with bit torrents.
