flip the obvious win for your HT situation is a Ps3 running linux or windows... that would be the best of both worlds

I really am thinking of getting the htpc....How large is the average movie?

well if ur talking about torrents... a decent rip (9V/9A) usually runs right around 700megs.

straight up copying dvd files off dvds is 4+ gigs or so

and well if ur talkin about netflix dls, i have no earthly idea

To add, I didn't even know it was possible.

google is your friend... it can be done to a stock Ps3 or you can change out the HD for a much larger one (to download movies and such) all without voiding the warranty

sony has even endorsed a version of linux (yellow dog linux) for the Ps3

you can run windows on the system as well, its just technically "illegal"

The answer I was looking for is 4 GB. I do not have the internet at home....so I will be copying DVDs to a hard drive. That gives me a good idea. The PS3 only has 8 GB which is what 20 movies realistically?

you mean 40gb and 80gb...

the thing is you can put any laptop hardrive (the largest capacity you can find) into the Ps3 (still not voiding the warranty btw) and it will automatically format it for the Ps3, from there you can partition the HD from the Ps3's dashboard

add to that you have the capibility to play blu-rays in HD

now take all the functions you get from the Ps3

and look at the prices of a comparible media center comp system

that im not sure of... but with external burners being so cheap i dont see that being an issue, it would prolly still come out cheaper

What I mean is it will be in a cooler. I will be traveling 8 hours in the seat with the fish in a cooler with ice.

Just pack the cooler in dry ice and it will be fine.

dry ice works wonders..my parents kept deer meat frozen from Colorado to Mississippi with it..and said most of the ice was still there like 30 something odd hours later.
