But my brother had a ticket there and went to court. Said there was a guy there from MD also. The judge told him "didnt I tell you to never speed in my state again" she sentenced him to 30 days on the spot. I was like can they do that? I cant verify the story, but i dont think my brother would lie about that.

They can, especially if he were a habitual violator.

The court system in the county where I use to work would give everyone that plead guilty a 30 day suspended sentence. Meaning, if you didnt have the money then, you were going to jail for 30 days or until it was paid. There was no "time to pay" BS.
