Or just have a good level of knowledge?

I just want basic knowledge of proper investing.

I'm not one to take risks with money, so I'm sure doing stuff like Roth IRA's are more up my alley.

Investing is a lot like religion. You kind of have to find what works for you.
You can invest in a variety of things with an IRA....it's just a type of investment vehicle, like a savings account.

I'm not looking for huge returns. I know that usually involves more risk.

It is an exchange traded fund (like mutual fund) that invests in US capital markets.
It is diversified in the following ways

1. asset allocation (bonds/stocks/cash)

2. sector (retail/maunfacturing/healthcare)

3. market capitalization (big companies/small companies)

What does that mean?

As an example, say I invest $5000 right now... what would that do me...

I am aware. I try to assign values to those things to determine whether or not it is worth it to continue/discontinue/or advance the relationship.
How else do you know if you should?

Consider happiness. Do some things not make you more happy than others? Shouldn't you involve yourself in activities that made you more happy?

If he invested $5000 in that right now, what would he look forward to in say 10, 20, 30 years.

basically whats the return on investment.
