This is true. My older Promaster AF lens did not AF with the D40. It has a mechanical AF, where as the D40 uses a purely electronic interface between the lens and body.

you has a D40?

what would you say if my primary use for the camera was going to be nice photography where i will be using a manual focus, but i want the autofocus for snapshots and such, probably a 50/50 mix between man and auto.

and i dont really see much need for AF lenses other than the 55-200mm VR lense im going to get.

im really torn between the 40 and 50, but havent looked at the 50 in person yet. im gonna try that today, see if the interface and ease of use is the same.

My friend has one. I played with it for a bit, because I used to be a huge PhotoWhore.

All in all I was pleased with it, I don't really have much to compare it to that would be apples to apples. It's a nice little DSLR, IMO. I'd be happy to have one.

Although if I were to pick up a DSLR I'd probably try and find a used D2 body or something of that nature, but that won't happen anytime soon.
