I have a set of infinity Kappa 3 way components rated for 100 watts. Im drivin them with an old school ppi 2x150 amp. Before the volume even comes close to loud the speakers cut out, then they will come back on and then cut out again.

I also have some infinity rear speakers, 2 way rated for 50 watts and they are powered by the same type of old ppi 2x75 and they rock. Much more volume than the 100 watts 3 ways... maybe double the volume. Is my amp toast?

Or could the speakers be the problem??

check your ground on the amp that cuts out. thatd be where i start, use multiple grounds whenever possible. make sure its a good ground, if its worth starting you mise well finish it and clean it up use those washers that have teeth on them also.

ok, ill redo the ground, double check etc etc. Im using the same ground post for my sub amp and my rear speaker amp and they are ok, but i will go over it again just in case.

Ok I double checked the ground cable and it looks good. Since both my amps are the same i plugged in to the smaller one and same problem. Once the volume goes up it cuts out, so I dont think its the amp. I will check to see if the speakers are touching ground.

Do you think checking the ohms on each speaker would detect anything. My tweets are easy to get at but the mids are a *****.

thanks to all who replied. I found the recessed gain screw - the writing was rubbed off and it was set waaaay to high. I must have been clipping something awefull. Now its ok and the system is aok. great sound. thanks again.

This site is great!

Checked out the sticky about gain and will adjust accordingly.
