Cell phone activation?

Im looking to get a new cell phone, mine's barely working and gets no reception anywhere (antenna issue) i went to go look at phones today (at the Verizon store), the CHEAPEST phone was 279.99 + 165.00 activation fee. i was completely floored by that, considering they pretty much GIVE them away with a 2 year contract

Now waiting to renew my plan and get a new phone is not an option, i have another 9-10 months left in my contract, and if i cancel now i have to bite the $200 early termination fee. Verizon has a thing called "phone upgrade" where they give you a discount on a phone if you're 22 months or more into a contract, but like i said i can't wait that long.

now if i purchased a phone on say, eGay, how do i get it activated? i know Cingular has just the Sim card and you switch it out, Verizon doesn't. so do i and just pay the 165.00 to get it activated, will i have the same number?

Just seems like there's no way to do it that you're not getting Fucked //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

the contracts really screw you. Is there physical damage to the antenae from abuse or is it a manf defect? Have you had it more than a year? if you have 9-10 months left, I assume you do. You can pretty much get any Verizon 'stamped' phone and have it activated by a service center. They really are making more money off of you with your monthly service, stupid how they don't want to make sure that service you are paying for is goo tho. LOL. Don't they have ANY kind of upgrade discounting since you have been with them for so long. I used to work for T-Mobile and we would do JUST about anything to get a cusotmer on another two year contract...it IS ALL about that contract!

wow that much to activate???

ive got sprint and they havent charged me single dollar for activiting any of my phones since ive broke about 10 in the past 6 months. and i got two lines right now one phone you got to yell into it and the other the battery dies fast. bad luck with phones...

call them up ask to talk to a supervisor tell them your situation and i know sprint has it where they give you a discount even if you just had a phone for a year.

but dont ever get sprint i dunno they fuc me over with other stuff

from inside the industry.... sprint's customer service is on the bare bones bottom of the list. No one had to worry about competing with their service. T-mobile, Verizon and Cingular were the top-dogs. FYI...T-mobile has won the JD POWERS award the last 4 years running for their customer service.

yeah the phone is pretty physically damaged from where i work, it takes quite a beating, so i couldn't go in there and pretend like i wanted the warranty to cover it and get the same phone brand new, im on my 4th phone of this kind and it's just not durrable at all.

now the battery will barely last me 3-4 hours, and the price of a new battery is pretty much as much a new phone.
