Can you go deaf cuz of subwoofers?

I was wondering, my friend told me if you constantly listen to the low frequency bass in my car, you'll eventually go deaf. Is this true?

now i have an 1986 honda civic DX hatchback with two 12" infinity's and yes they do hurt my ears and anybody else's ears when they are only 3 quarter of the volume.

now can you really, go deaf? cuz i think since there's no trunk to muffle half the noise, most of the noise exits through the front windows and impacts the driver and the passengers first.

If it's loud enough to hurt your ears then it's loud enough to cause some hearing damage if you listen to it that loud for extended periods. low frequences don't hurt your ears more than any other frequencies though. It would take a long time to actually make you go deaf but trust me, any dammage to your hearing sucks

Higher frequences hurt worse than the lower end of the spectrum. Any excessive sound at high volumes will hurt your ears but technically the low frequencies are not as bad. Either way, it is not worth it to lose your hearing. Even worse than losing your hearing is that you can have a permanent ringing in your ears that does not go away(learned that from psy 101). Save the high volumes for SPL comps.

i've been into car audio for over 11 years now and have lost some of my hearing as a result. i'm not sure that a complete loss of hearing can happen unless there are extreme circumstances involved, but i've lost enough to where i'm always asking people to repeat themselves... it sucks!!

mxracer.... im curious to know how ur loss of hearing occur. did it occur over a long period of time? or did it just go away one day? cuz i'm pretty scared of losing my hearing. i think my hearing is slowly getting worse, and am quite worried. any precautions i should take?

it went away slowly enough for me to not really notice it. what started clueing me in was having to ask people to repeat themselves all the time. (and my girlfriend bit**ing about me having the tv up too loud, etc...) the only advice i can really offer is this... do you really need it as loud as you are playing it?? i thought i did, but i have found a nice medium where it is loud, but my ears aren't ringing afterwards. one tip though... if you find you are turning the volume up further the longer you listen to it, thats where you can encounter the most danger. leave the volume up on your system one night, and when you get in your car the next day, ask yourself if it's too loud. if it is, you are getting used to a really high volume level, and on your way to damaging your hearing. (this is all in my opinion of course, but it's true!)

I'll deffinately second this tip. I eventually caught myself doing this and was able to identify it with only a minor hearing loss. I also attend tons of rock/metal concerts and play in a band so I also had other contributing factors, but I tend to turn the tv volume up louder than anyone elses comfortable listening level. Never turn your music up to where it hurts your ears.

I'll triple you two. If your ears are ringing after you get out of your car from your stereo system, you've got a serious problem. I've never had that happen to me, but I know when too loud is too loud. Stereo systems come at a price, but hearing is much more valuable.

I've been around a while...

Grand Funk at the Yale Bowl. Fingers-in-ears in nosebleed seats in the bleachers. Ears rang for 3 days afterward.

Humble Pie at the New Haven Coloseum. Could feel the music vibrating the concrete floor of the parking garage 3 levels up.

Deep Purple at Colt Park, Hartford. Had to leave because of the pain.

Later in life - table saw, jig saw, router, shop vac, jointer, etc in my woodworking hobby. Loud-*** tools.

My hearing drops like a rock at 4 kHz. Now I wear hearing protectors when working in my shop. Way too late. Be smart, kids...

I believe the general db level is 80 for long-term listening.

As a person who has a 100% loss of hearing in my left ear, let me tell you, you don't want to lose your hearing. And for those of you astute enough to figure it out, yes, the above statement means I have no idea what stereo sounds like, I've been this way since 6mos old.

I actully think that asking can you repeat that is more habit than anything. I listen to my system nearly everyday which is two kicker comps in a dodge truck and a 250.2 fosgate amp and i havent noticed much hearing loss a little but not much but it would be a diffrent story if i was driving my comp vehicle!
