Calling anyone who's used Peel N' Seal...

I am about to do a new installation in my car (99 Honda Civic Coupe), and I was considering using Peel N' Seal for deadening my trunk, rear deck, and doors. What I was wondering is since it is asphalt, will will it be able to withstand the Southern California heat of the summer?

Its convenient for me to get PNS because I can just pick it up from my local Lowes tomorrow and get started, not to mention its cheap. I don't know if it will hold up though, I want to hear your guys' opinions.

Thanks! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Its held for a long summer out in the sun for me. Plus I havent smelled the aspalt at all since I installed it.

A bunch of people complain saying it doesnt stick, but they just dont know how to properly install it anyway. lol

A heat gun or space heater works wonders. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Can you explain why you would not? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif
Sure...

Asphalt based deadeners will have a failure temperature hundreds of degrees lower than a butyl-rubber one will. When it does in fact fail, asphalt will bubble and turn into a sticky, black gooey paste that will be a ***** to take off, vs. a butyl deadener that will simply loose adhesion and fall off.

Google the sound deadening showdown that was done a while back...photos and experiments don't lie, and say more on the subject than we ever could //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i basicallly use pns (edead //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif)

no good. in this socal heat... no no

Why would you want to take the deadening off though? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

I know for a fact there is no way the deadening on the inside of my doors and on my trunk panels will come off. They are stuck forever. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/imdaman.gif.bc6c552e19aa4ad8c47461144f40eb1a.gif

Ok, thanks guys, looks like im going to be sticking with Raammat.

Anyone want to make an educated guess at how many ft^3 it would take to do my 99 Civic Coupe's trunk, rear deck, and doors?

eh, theres no real number. you can use 100sq feet or you can use 500 (like metal did, and **** it turned out nice... but that wasn't just mat either) i personally bought 108sq feet of dynamat and will be looking to buy alot more in the future, alot of sludge as well. btw this is in my project car which is a beetle

Definitely do NOT use PnS ... makes the car smell like *** and a half (some people say it goes away in weeks, in my friends car, the smell didn't go away for ~4 months) .... Second Skin is amazing.. I used that in my car, and it worked wonders, and also smells kinda nice i think. I learned to like that smell alot...

Butyl based products for sure.

honestly, asphalt is not that bad if its not on a verticle or inverted location, if you use it on the base of your trunk (wheelwell area) and the floor of the vehicle, since its less expensive, you can cover more area with less money - the downside is its generally less effective than butyl based products.

and a note on installing ANY asphalt based deadener, it seems that heating the asphalt TOO MUCH will tend to help deteriorate the adhesion over time, just heat it till its tacky - and apply with a roller - do not overheat!

if it were me, i would prolly get PNS for the floor, and then extra rammmatt or secondskin for the walls and maybe an extra layer over the PNS... that is - if you are doing THAT much of a project.

yes i have PNS in my car, no i have not had any problems with it, and no my car did not, does not, and never has smelled like asphalt as a result of installing PNS in my car.
