What you just said is more common, but i've read in magazines (i think audio & entertainment) that breaking them in actually does nothing. They measured a sub that they broke in and initially it had a further excursion, but after like 6 hours it went back to its normal size. Their conclusion was that this basically does nothing, but it doesn't hurt the sub at all, and why not?
