Blown HU? :-|

Ugh - So i was tryin to fix my REM amp wire in the back of my HU, and I was all done, put the - batt back on, saw i forgot to crimp the wires for the constant power back together afterwords, so i just thought id crimp em...Well of course the wire while it was touching the pliers, the handle of the pliers hit my ground conn in the back of the deck, and it made some sparks, a lil feedback and shocked me...And now my deck wont work along w/ my interior dome lights. I went and checked all the fuses for the radio, ignition, etc and everything's fine....My HU still wont turn on after I re-checked all the wiring and the harnesses...however ive tried to take a reading w. my new multi meter on where im getting power from, and as far as i can tell, theres no power to the harnesses, which would indicate a blown fuse...? but ive already checked those! i might not be using the MM right (i touch the red to the wire and black to a ground)...but when i touch the 2 constant power wires together, i get nothing...any help would be appriciated...sorry for the poor/broken english, im kinda in a panic here lol

you may have burnt your wire harness somewhere. try taking a reading with your dmm by connecting your positive lead to the positive of the wire harness, then connect the negative lead to a ground besides the wire harness ground. if you get a voltage reading, that means you most likely blew your ground wire of your wire harness. that can simply be fixed by creating a new ground for the radio. if you don't get a reading, that means you most likely blew your positve wire of your harness. also, a simple way to check your head is to connect it directly to a 12v power source, car battery. just make sure you have a fuse in-line with you positve wire.

thanks for the fast reply - ill check the wiring now...as far as checking the HU...how would i directly connect it to the battery? with the harness on? without? run a small wire to the pos/neg from the harness?

Same exact thin happened to me...find your fuse box and there is either 1 or 2 fuses that are connected into your hu. One is for hu and the other is hu and all interior lights, door beeping and stuff. change those out and you will be fine.

Alright - so with my DMM i checked the power/ground and it appears that my power lead has gone to ****...so...how the hell do i go about replacing this? i know where it starts...but where does it need to end up? can i just wire it right to my battery (+) ?

yes, you can connect a new power wire to your battery. this is how i have my head unit connected. just be sure to install the proper fuses, preferably near the battery.

Alrighty - So after a couple hours in the garage, here's what Ive come to conclude....

1. Ive blown my HU into a state of non-workingness. I tried to connect the HU right to the Batt w/ the ground from the Sony harness right to the Neg bat and the Red Constant power right to the positive switch, and nothing happened. No motor, no lights, nothing. So this means my deck is gone and out of comission right? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

2. Ive also managed to blow my power and maybe ground cable cuz I cant get a reading off of the factory wiring from my DMM and Ill have to get these replaced with a little clever wiring from myself...

Is all this possible from what I described above? Novice mistake, I know, but ive learned lol...So anyways Im planning on taking my other car to Silverthorn tomorrow where theres an audio shop where I bought all my stuff from, and Im gonna ask them to check the deck out to make sure. Is is prob just gonna be cheaper to buy a new deck? I was looking at one around 250 bucks for a replacement...

i forgot mention that when connecting a hu directly to a battery for testing, you have connect both the power and ignition wires to the postive terminal of the battery. these are usually the red and yellow wires of most wire harnesses.

yeah i kinda figured that ...and its still not workin, oh well. i was looking into a new HU anyways...thanks for the replies! i do, however, have a new problem ...but i think it warrents its own thread //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif
