Me and my brother are back at it again. I'll try to keep things short and sweet. Last year we started our biggest build ever. 4 sundown X-8's on a 4000-sae, 3 way jl c5 component set on an xd600, pioneer p99 headunit, 100% coverage deadending with GP stfu mat, xs power battery, and mechman 320 alt. We hit 148 at 36hz in competition and overall were really happy with it. Of course there's always the want for more and we're starting our next upgrade. We're going to swap out the X-8's for 2 18" zv5's in a 4th order blowthrough. For now were going to keep the 4000 watt amp so the only thing that going to change is the subs. So the big question is how much louder are we going to get switching to the 18's?
I made a post about this a few weeks ago going over my mindset for the new build. In a nutshell I'm hoping we get a nice peak from the 4th order and then, with the help of cabin gain, maintain a good response all the way down. All of this is going in a 2000 ford ranger regular cab (extremely small cabin) so I'm really counting on/ hoping for cabin gain to save this build from turning into a 1 hit wonder. All of this aside, what do think we'll gain from increasing cone size? I guess the rule of thumb is 3db every time you double cone area but I want to hear your experience with this. We have 155 set as a personal goal but I hesitate to think we'll get 7db just by switching to 18's
What are your thoughts?

I'd say if you grab another 4K, have sufficent electrical and wire ea low you might have a fighting chance of gaining that theoretical 10db (7db).
Otherwise I'd just be throwing numbers out there.

imo 155 wont be TOO hard with 2 18's if installed right and powered enough.

I mean you're not only increasing cone area but you're going from the X's to the Zv5's and you're going 4th order blowthrough. I think your goal is realistic. I agree with above tho.. you should double your power. Those 18 Zv5's are beast. You're gonna need all the power you can get.

Thank you for your replies! I totally understand the power dilemma! Only reason we aren't upping the power is because of cash flow. We figure the 4000 will do justice for now but were thinking a salt 6k for the future. That will keep us in the 6000 watt class but allow us to throw a solid 4k per sub (if we can hold 14.4 that is 😂). Thanks again for the guesses. Keep them coming! I'll keep you posted on the offical numbers when we get them

I don't know if y'all are following the thread still but the build is done and I have some numbers. Mid build we did a spl test and got 150.0 at 32hz. After the build was done we were only able to hit 149.5 at 36hz. This was confusing but now that the system has broken in some we hit 151 at 36 hz. We are 150+ from 30 to 38 and 140+ from 20 to 55. We also ordered a sfb 8k and are hoping to get the 155 with more break in and a few upgrades to our battery bank. I will continue to keep you posted!

All jokes aside, I figured it out. I took the plastic cover thing off of the negative battery terminal, and I can attach a new ground wire right...
