Amp settings

So I was reading some posts and someone said that you shouldn't really have your bass boost above 6db and I realized that I had mine at 18db which is the most it will go. So then I turned it down and my subs obviously got considerably quiter. So then I turned the specific sub volume all the way up and it still wasnt loud enough. So my question to you guys is if I must turn one of the settings up, which one should I turn up:

1)Bass Boost on the amp

2)Gain on the amp

3)Bass setting on the HU

or should I just turn all of them up a little bit?

Any input would be appreciated.
