amp problem?

i got a older fosgate amp punch 40

when i turn up any of the gains it starts to make a steady loud thumping sound from the subs (and no its not the beat to the music)

is this to do with the ground interferance or is there something wrong with the amp?

what is the ohm rating for you 2 subs and are they

dual or single voice coil subs

i had an amp a long time ago that had some ground noise in it and it was a buzzing sound...and every now and then it would thump like what your saying....you might try running the rca cables on the other side of the car from the power wire and try to keep it as far away as possible from any power wires....cause it will have the chance to pick up the noice fromt he alternator and other such interferences....good luck....
