it seems to me that these two have the same features, except that the 7998 does not have an internal amplifier...and the display look different

is that all???

which one is the better buy

I believe everything is the same besides the internal amp and the display. I would go for the 7998 if u plan on amping all of your speakers.

The 9833/35 are lovely decks. The 7998 has been around for many years now, it's display was gorgeous then, and is gorgeous now.. just not as gorgeous as some of these newer versions out. If you're worried about efficiency, who cares if the 9833 has a preamp, the deck is a bit cheaper anyhow. If you have your heart set on the 7998, look in Crutchfield this month. It's on sale for $399.99.

The 7998 being a 79 series alpine should be the better sq unit as it probably has better preamp section and better components it also has the external dc-dc converter which the 78 series doesn't get.

The 7998 is very similar to the 9835 but has the 1 1/2 din phantom face which I think kicks a** but made that unit almost no affordable.

Right now if I were you I would get the CDA 9835, the best Alpine deck to date. It can be had on ebay for less than 400 bucks which is a steal. I love the 7998 and it's phantom face but it is OVER priced. Brand new in some stores they still want over 700 bucks for it.
