adaptor for cd player

I have a '99 Ford Escort that has that circular radio/tape player/air conditioner. I have been told that there is some sort of adaptor that has to be installed before I can have a cd player put in my car. Anyone know anything about that? Any help would be appreciated. Radio is getting very boring these days. Thanks.
