8in Subwoofer Sealed Box Recommendations

It’s been about 15years since I’ve been on this site! Crazy to see it still going strong it seems. And, it’s been about that long since I’ve done a build.

5th Gen 4Runner build (small build)

Just installed CDT Wideband Unity 7.5 in the dash. CDT HD-690CFS 6X9 front doors. Hertz DCX 1653 6.5 rear doors, along with a CDT ACD 5ch amp running the front stage. Rears off HU. Will say, those CDT sound pretty good!

Just looking for some solid recommendations for an 8in sub, doing a sealed box. 400w max. Not looking for purse SPL, would like some SQ but can get “low” if need be. Boring build I know, but all I’m looking to do right now as I take my 4Runner off road and need the space.

Considering you already have a pair of 6x9s, each of which is essentially the equivalent of an 8" driver, might want to shoot for a 10" - you'll be glad you did, seriously glad you did.

Seriously, though, don't bother with the 8" when these guys are around; a similarly priced or slightly lower priced setup will disappoint, comparatively.

You can't beat cone area for quality bass reproduction, and I'm not talking SPL or, boom boom goes the room, all these will provide very enjoyable bass that's actually worth listening to.

Good point, I’ve been thinking about possibly doing a 10 aswell. If I were to go that route, I was looking into the Crescendo forte v2 (was thinking same with their 8) or DD SL700. There so many options it’s crazy, along with new brands I’ve never heard of.

If you haven't yet decide on how much space you are willing to sacrifice for an enclosure and go from there.

Looking to take minimal space. .4 .5. I think I can have a box made to go along the fendwell. And you’re right, there’s a lot of options.

Youre now wanting to stick the sub in the corner...
A single 8 would be lame & youre not putting 2 8's in the corner.

Your system now is no slouch & a single 8 would be a downfall.
A single 10 - 12 in the correct box will be awesome.
Add a bass control knob & you will be set!

Start looking for some 4runner forums, im sure theres already some threads on sub boxes, just need to find them.

You want to purchase a carista unit off amazon get the cheap one,
& turn-off the fake engine noise & noise canceling features within the unit settings, very simple to do with carista..

pretty sure the 4 runner is no different than my 4th gen tacoma, fake engine noise being pumped into the cab through the speakers & also noise canceling also being pumped-in....

You will hear odd noises through the sub of you dont.


Also curious if you used a PAC ap4 ty 14, to get your signal?

Im clueless when it comes to this xchit but have another question that needs to be considered & brought-up, may be a consideration when it comes to sub selection.
Sure other way smarter than me can give there 2 cents.

Assuming your running the sub off the 5th channel of the CDT amp?
Or are you running a separate sub amp you didnt mention?


The CDT sub ch specs:

• Subwoofer section power: 300w@1 Ohm, 210w@2 Ohm 120wx1@4 Ohm

Looks like were picking some subs with some serious rms power handling capability 1k rms.

Im guessing the sub would be way under-powered.

Wouldnt it make more sense to get a lower level sub with a lower rms rating & be ran more efficiently with the power you have?

Theres lots of subs that have an rms rating closer to 500 & not 1k.

I don’t think any 4Runners have ASC, or ESE except for 25 and up. But, that’s good information to know.

You’re a 100% correct, and I did state 400watts max when making this post. More than likely (something I was already considering prior to posting this) I will just get another 5ch amp as I was already considering just running a 10.

I think Incan get away with 500w (half power, or a really efficient sub) for a period of time before needing to get a bigger amp. It’s been a long time since I’ve done this, and I’ve never really ran anything under powered.
