8" Sub recommendation wanted.

I'm going to be fabbing an enclosure to go behind the rear seat of my Ford Sporttrac. I'm using a design of a friend of mine. He's using a Polk DX8. The enclosure is sealed and is about .35 ft^3 in volume.

I'll be running a moderate amount of power to this, somewhere between 200-400 watts. My question is, is the DX8 a pretty good sub for the money? Is there something better that doesn't break the bank and has comparable size specs?

I'm sure most of you out there will scoff at the measly 8" sub, but the Sporttrac is very limited in where I could put a sub.

Thanks in advance! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well, I'm not laughing at your 8, I know for a fact that 8's can hit too, that's why they made them! I don't know what stores you have there, but in a CARTOYS here Rockford 8's are cheap, like $30 for the Punch HE2. Personally though, I recommend any JL subs. The Rockford one has a 400 watt peak, but with even a JL 8W0, you could put that much in it all day. Whatever your budget and whatever you choose, I'm sure it will sound good! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'm also of the same opinion. I have heard quite a few highly impressive systems with 8 inch subs.

The Polk DX8 is actually a pretty good sub for the money; decent power handling, excursion, frequency response, etc.

I would say it would be a good choice.

Also, to add a level of comparrison, have a look at the Alumapro Alusonic 8 here:

I am sure that you will find it to offer equal, if not even more impressive .

take it easy,

I have 2 8w3's and a phoenix gold cyclone, the 8w3's are very good but I mainly use them for midbass. They are very tight, but if you want a very good solid sub-bass sub, get the eclipse 8 inch sub.

Thanks for those of you that had comments. Very much appreciated!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

I've seen several posts over the last week or so mentioning using polyfill in a sub box. Would it be a good idea for me to put polyfill in this box? What would be the advantages/disadvantages of doing so?

Keep in mind it will be around .35^3 ft. I'm still considering the Polk Audio dx8, and probably something around a 200-400W rms Amp to push it with.

Thanks again in advance!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

you know what 8s can hit what i would do is get a 8 inch solo baric in a vented hatchback box that would deffinitly kick.

If you'll notice from the top of the thread, I'm driving a Sporttrac. I don't know what size your hatchback box is, but I doubt it would fit in the space behind the rear seats of my ride.

I helped my son make a sub box for his std cab Ranger. Not much room there, the enclosures only came out to about .3 cu ft each. With some cheap Legacy 10" subs it sounded like crap. They would break into major distortion at only mild volume levels. We concluded that the enclosures were just too small for the 10's.

I made recessed cover plates for the 10" holes and he bought Kicker VR 8" subs. We also added poly fill. His amp does 75 wrms per channel and with the subs literally in your back they'll pound your ass off.

The poly fill is a big help with small boxes.
