3 10w3v2's vs 2 12w3v2's

ok, the amp i'm going to be using is a jbl1200.1 if i get the 2 12's i would get dual 4's and run em at 4 ohms(which would be exactly 300 watts to each sub) and i would prob port the 12's, but if i went with the 3 10's i would seal em and get dual 4's and run em at a total of 2.67 ohms gettins about 970 watts and just watch the gains. but hears my question, which do you think would have the best sound quality, response, spl, and be able to feel the most.? they will be going in the back of a 98 monte carlo. which would you recommend?

You can port with that amp, just make sure you get a set of FMODs from Parts Express to help act as an SSF since thats what the JBL lacks. Or you could have an equalizer that has an SSF built in but thats usually if your going the SQ route. The FMOD's if I remember correctly have a 12db slope and are only like $30-35 shipped.

Oh BTW if you hook up a SVC 4 Ohm sub and another SVC 4 Ohm sub to the JBL it will view it as a 2Ohm load and you will be getting 600 watts not 300. Although I think your talking about getting DVC stuff but I wasn't sure. So if the subs were 4ohm DVC's then yeah you can hook them up properly to get the amp to view it as 4 ohms.

As far as SPL, in general 3 10's should probably provide more SPL than 2 ported 12's because not only do you have more surface area moving air, you also have more wattage going to those 10's than the 12's. Although if your 12's are ported at the right Hz and have a good sized box then they could definitely be louder.

For response, 2 12's will generally have a better response range but it really depends on the type of sub and the box you put it in. Because like everyone says a $500 sub in a poor quality box is going to sound worse than a $100 sub in a good quality box.

As for SQ it depends if you like tight bass or boomy bass. The sealed 10's are going to provide tighter bass than ported 12's. But like everything a good or bad box design can change that opinion. Therefore, I'd look at what specific subs I want to run and then try to design a box around them, that way you get the most out of the sub. If you're not sure post your questions about different subs on the forums or use the search function. But its really hard to say which is going to be louder, etc... because of the differences between subwoofer designs and of course the need for a good high quality box design.
