2001 Civic Setup From Stock

I just bought a 2001 Honda Civic LX 4 DR. Everything is stock, including the stereo.

I'm looking in to a new stereo, and I want some unbiased opinions on what I should get. I was quoted $1900 from a local audio store on this setup (plus install and parts):

- Pair Kicker 10" Subs $220

- Box $79.95

- Parts/Amp Kit $39.95

- Amp R801 (For Subs) $380

- Front Eclipse Speakers $99.95

- Rear Eclipse Speakers $99.95

- 4 CH Eclipse Amp $259.95

- Sony CDX-M8805 $350

+Tax+Install+Parts=$1900

I know for $1900 I can do much better off of eBay, but the only thing I know I want is the CDXM8800. Other than that I don't know what will fit/work together/work at all/sound the best. I was considering components but I don't know if they are worth it, I know $100 a pair speakers won't be great.

Bottom line- I want great sound and bass, what would you recommend? If it matters I listen to mostly alternative/rock/metal.

Thx.

yea which kickers are those? i hope those arent the comp vr's as you can find those online for about 70 bucks a piece for the 12's. if they are the l7's then thats a little better. you can probably get most of that setup online for MUCH less than 1900 bucks.

I'm not positive which ones he quoted me on but for retail at 219/pair I'm sure they were the cheaper ones. I know I can do better online, I'm asking for a detailed sample setup that would sound good in the Civic.

You could very easily get a set of M6's from Diamond Audio or maybe even some CDT's though I'm not exactly sure of your budget, though the Diamonds would probably only be $80-$100. Second of all, you could get much better sound quality from something other than Kicker, just go to Resonant Engineering's website, http://www.respl.com and contact them about a dealer. Everyone seems to like them. You could also enquire about Magnums, never actually heard one, but everyone seems to like them, and they can apparently get louder than kickers. This would probably be more wattage too, seeing as the amp for your subs is only 800 rms. Third, stay away from Sony, there was a thread in the "General Discussion" section about how a ton of people had troubles with that model, it works for about 6 months and generally starts skipping. If you're going Eclipse everything, you might as well look into the CD3434 or the CD3424. Fourth, the box would probably be prefabricated. Get a nice custom box built that would suit the needs of your sub-woofer. All and all, very poor representation for the buck. Wait it out. Go around, listen to things, get what you like, and don't rush into it. This way you will not only know what constitutes "good" and "bad," but you'll also have more money when it comes time for the new system. I was a n00b once to, and I made the mistake of going for a pure Pioneer system, which was a lot of money and merely mediocre. Car audio is a strange business, you mention a top-tier brand like RE (Resonant Engineering), everyone is like, "I've never heard of them? They must **** big floppy donkey dick!" But you mention Sony, a bottom-line brand as far as car audio goes, and they're like, "Yeah, Sony's awesome!" Go around and listen to some of the many suggestions you'll get from this forum, and you'll hear a noticeable difference from the so-called "name brands". Are you going to listen to me? If you're like most of the other n00bs, probably not, but they're learning from their mistakes, and they'll end up replacing the stuff which means the $1500+ that they spent was all for naught. Just trying to save you money!

I hear ya, really. I'm not trying to rush into things which is exactly why I posted here. My budget isnt't too tight, I make good money and I want this to last me a while, so I'm willing to spend what it takes.

I mislead you, I should have left the whole quote thing out. For now, I'm going to have a head unit, speakers, and amp for the speakers installed. The rest will come later. I really am looking into JL Audio's nicest line of components, but I'm not positive on what amp I'll need for them and things like that, or if they will fit (even though I think I have 6.5"). I want everything to work perfectly and I'm worried that if I attempt to buy on my own, they just won't.

I have also heard bad about Sony, but that is the only head unit style I like (flat panel display). I'm not "flashy" in any sense so it appeals to me. I don't know, this is all a little frustrating. Let me know what you think about the speakers though. Thanks for the good answer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

check out my sig. for my civic. i havent listed everything there. pm me and ill tell you what i have and how much it cost me. cheaper than what you are going to pay and a hell of alot louder and cleaner. peace

Do yourself a HUGE favor and start out simple. Buying a whole system at one time is expensive and you will lose quality trying to buy it all at once.

- Start with a good solid head unit of your choice. Make it a good head unit that YOU like and can live with and not have to upgrade from in a year.

- Next pick out a nice sounding set of components. You don't have to break the bank to get a nice sounding set of components.

- Don't worry about rear speakers right now. there will be time to replace the factory rears later on if at all. Most competition cars don't use rears.

- Those Kicker 10" subs seem a bit pricey. One good quality 12" in a nice enclosure will do the job. Remember you can upgrade later if you see it necessary.

- Then get a nice quality 4 channel amp, this is where you don't want to skimp. If its a big enough 4 channel then you can run your components on 1/2 and run the sub off the other 2 channels bridged. And when you have the money and the time you can add a subwoofer amp.

- Just remember.....don't skimp on quality for the sake of quantity, you'll regret it later.

Just my 10 cents.
