2 VOLT vs 4 VOLT preamp output from head unit

More voltage is thoeretically better, but rarely worth the upgrade for that feature alone. It will let you run your gain on the amp a bit lower to get full power, but the difference is small and with a good amp inaudible. If you are just concerned about your sub, it won't matter at all.

does a lower gain setting mean less thermal heat in/on the amp? was riding around for a couple of hours and both my amps went into protection mode and the tweeters of the cl-61s cut out (not all at the same time though).

the tweeters I just don't know what's wrong and why they cut out (the guy from cdt said due to distortion, but I would be running them up at the same level for a specified length of time and then they all of a sudden cut out after X minutes)

so what I'm going on right now is that the HU I have distorts early (I run it around 20-24/33 and they still cut out), so I have the amp gained at almost the lowest voltage so that a lower HU volume could acheive similar output, to no avail...

The gain setting only affect the heat generated by the amp if it is set too high and the amp is clipping. A clipping amp will overheat quickly.
I have used so many head units, with difference range voltage.

2volt, 4volt,5volt,8volt

I didn't notice any difference except the gain doesn't have to be set so high to get its full potential on the amp.
