2 ohm 4 ohm?

This may sound really stupid to a lot of you but whats the diff between 2 and 4 ohm. I bought two 12" alpine 12" type s subs and i'm looking at a rockford amp. I think they have 300 rms and 900 peak. Would the 851s be alright, it has 215 x 2 4 ohm or 425 x 2 2 ohm. Are type s subs 2 or 4 ohm or what do i go by???? Any help would be appreciated!!

Ohms is a measure of resistance/impedence(whatever..), in this case it is the resistance of the voice coil(s).Check your box and see what the resisatnce of the coil(s), or get a multimeter(radioshack) and you can test it yourself. The amp is saying "at 4 ohms resistance itll produce 215w of power to (2) channels, or at 2 ohms resistance itll produce 425w to (2) channels.

Basically the difference between 2ohm and 4 ohm sub wise is that it gives you wiring flexibility. Ex. if you have 2 4ohm SVC(single voice coil) you can wire them different ways like 8ohms or 2 etc.Or 2 2ohm you can wire to 1 or 4 ohms resistance.

Edit: The RMS/peak is the power handling of the coil(s) Peak doesnt mean crap. RMS is whats important
