Taramps Smart 5 single RCA IN? (Bass knob problem)

Neither of my bass knobs were mounted when I tested them. At different times I had them in the back seat with me or up front.

Taramps Smart 5 single RCA IN? (Bass knob problem)

Zero noise without a knob hooked up. But it happens with 2 different knobs that I know work and with 2 different RCAs that I know work. I noticed if I turn the LPF all the way to the left it sounds a lot better but I still get a hum thru the subs. Goofy thing is the noise happens even with...

Taramps Smart 5 single RCA IN? (Bass knob problem)

One is similar to an LC-1 (cheap) the other I bought from Slam Panda systems and is very nice. Both worked fine with 2 previous amps but neither works with the Taramps without causing constant noise.

Taramps Smart 5 single RCA IN? (Bass knob problem)

Anyone know why I'd be getting noise thru the subs when I hook up my universal rca style bass knob? Tried 2 different knobs and different rcas to no avail, didn't do this with my last amp.

Taramps Smart 5 single RCA IN? (Bass knob problem)

Fair enough. It seems there isn't a clearly superior choice. Makes it frustrating for someone who wants to do it the "best" way lol

Taramps Smart 5 single RCA IN? (Bass knob problem)

I have a Pioneer 80prs with the standard red/white RCA sub output. I've seen 3 different methods for hooking up the Smart 5. All 3 recommend by some and criticized by others. Which method do you use/recommend? 1. Use a Y splitter to combine the L/R RCAs into one and plug that into the IN. 2...

    Taramps smart 5k vs CAB-45

Considering trading my CAB-45 for a Taramps smart 5k. Just looking at specs and the smart is rated 5k at 1 and 2 ohm and drops to 2900 at 4 ohm. The CAB-45 is rated 2750 at 2 ohm. I'm wired at 1 ohm but seems with rise I'd get significantly more power from the smart. Thoughts?

Bizarre problem - thump from subs related to back seat

No issues since unplugging the knob so I got to believe its the source of the problem. Maybe there are other contributing factors, no idea what they would be though. The ground runs thru the floor under the opposite seat and to the frame. I have it sleeved and am using a rubber grommet. I used...

Bizarre problem - thump from subs related to back seat

The wire was running under the trim next to the seat. It was in a fairly deep "well" so I know it wasn't being pinched. I have no idea how touching the seat gently with a blanket affected the wire, makes no sense to me. Even more strange is I had already played with that wire and even stepped...

Bizarre problem - thump from subs related to back seat

Getting thump from subs when rear passenger seat is got on or off and today noticed it will do it when I touch it with a blanket lol. No wires in or under this seat unless they are factory and hidden. Touching it with my hand wont do it. Posted a video of it happening here: Video Never mind, it...

Same subs/power in a small walled hatchback vs a suv?

This isn't something I'm actually doing I'm more just curious if its logically true. I got dragged in a facebook group for saying this and I'm trying to educate myself.

Same subs/power in a small walled hatchback vs a suv?

It was my opinion that in a little walled hatch the same system would sound louder and move more air than it would in a large suv. My reason for thinking this is really simple. You are sitting directly in front of the speakers, the source of the sound is right next to your head. Also since the...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I did revisit the webpage and it actually has a 3" coil, I know the SAv2 has a 2.75" coil and is rated 1000W also, so I'm hoping that 1000W is more accurate then we thought. I've actually learned more than I bargained for in this thread/post. Definitely appreciate everyone's contributions👍

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Typically bass on the EQ will be at 0 or turned down slightly. Increasing it can introduce distortion. If I were only using sub level on the head unit I would set the gain with it maxed but I'm using a remote gain knob instead.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I got the volt meter hooked up. I also replaced the speaker wire with some very high quality 10ga and rewired using the method in the image, making sure the wires were equal length. Then brought the box a couple inches closer to the tailgate. It occurred to me playing DJ Russticals songs may...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Yeah I just got the volt meter in the mail a couple days ago. It doesn't have a turn on wire so I went and bought a toggle switch today. I'll get it installed asap.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Not specifically at the amp. I have a volt meter I need to wire into the amp so I can get a more accurate reading. I've got a cheap cigarette lighter volt meter and my head unit displays voltage as well but nothing directly from the amp.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I'll have to see if I can figure out a way to record a video of what I'm seeing. Basically what I did was stand behind the suv with the rear hatch open and watch the cones. I used my phone via bluetooth to go thru the freq one at a time, 25 to like 38. All at the same volume level. I looked...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Would that make sense if the cone starts moving again below 28hz? As I went down from 28 or up from 30 the cone would start noticeably moving again.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Why would the port be 38" long?
  22. L

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I wouldn't know. I'm certainly not an expert and have no way of knowing if they are exaggerating. The website claims they use different parts, like a stiffer spider and extended length voice coil. If the 1000 watts is bullsh*t, then I got took, because I doubt they'll take them back.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Subsonic is at 25 I believe. I did test it with the tailgate open so the port would having just been firing out into open air. Sounds like I need to have another box built with a smaller port, preferably in the center so its equal distance between the subs.
  24. L

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Yeah the box was in the vehicle when I tested it. I just opened the tailgate and stood there so I could see what the cones were doing.
  25. L

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Yeah I don't know if what I read about finding the tuning based on cone movement at certain freqs is accurate. If it is I'd be tuned around 28-30hz as the cone goes almost still in that range but going above or below increases cone movement. I could see about building another box with the port...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

The builder didn't remember but I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure it out: Box dimensions: External 48" Wide by 28" Deep by 17" High. MDF is .75" and its double baffle so Internal should be 46.5 x 26.5 x 14.75. Port Internal: 9.75" Wide x 14.75" High x 28.25" long. If my math...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Should add I've been a bit concerned about the port being too big. I pushed the box closer to the rear and it "feels" like it does a little better. Likely not relevant but I read about finding tuning freq. with tones and did some testing and found that the cone really stops moving around 28-30hz.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I haven't checked each sub individually after wiring them, I can give that a shot. I've checked the ohm load as the amp would see it (1 ohm) and checked each coil when it wasn't hooked up(all 1 ohm exactly). My voltage tends to stay around 14, with my current settings I don't see it drop below...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I'm running two 1000w subs. I paid for the upgrade from PSI. I know the head unit has a clean signal to volume 52 and I don't allow the clip light to come on.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Found a guy on YouTube that did series-parrallel this way and tested a 1 ohm load with his DMM. This would seem to be a more balanced option?
  31. L

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

Its actually the one farthest from the port.
  32. L

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I paid for the 1000 watt upgrade. That +5 1 ohm means you can pay $5 to get exactly 1.0 ohm coils which I did. And all 4 coils read exactly 1.0 with my DMM. I'll look into setting gains with my DMM.
  33. L

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

That's kinda what I figured. I was hoping that having all that power move thru the first sub before entering the second was causing the problem and therefore I could fix it by adjusting the wiring somehow. If that isn't whats causing that one sub to warm up first things get more complicated.

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I don't have a DD-1 or oscilloscope so I wasn't able to set the gains that way. The gain is a touch under 1/4. I've used the clip light as my guide. I set it so that with the remote gain knob maxed and the radio at vol 52 it wouldn't clip. Some songs can get that clip light to blink but I always...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

I have one positive and one negative both from the same speaker going thru a hole in the box and into the amplifier. The amp is mono but provides 2 pos and 2 neg connections. I'm using one of each. I'll attach a "paint" picture to try and illustrate exactly how its wired. I'm using new 10 gauge...

    Series-parallel wiring and sub heat/smell

    (2) 1 ohm dvc subs wired in series-parallel for 1 ohm final load. Smelled voice coil again today (this seems to happen whenever i really push them) so I felt the subs. One dust cap was pretty warm in a specific spot the other was cool to the touch. The warm sub is the one connected to the amp...

What is this box tuned too? Recommended calc/software..

What would the affects of that be? I'm wondering if I need to have another box built right away or if I can use this temporarily. Tapping out the budget a bit and I don't have the tools to build the box myself unfortunately.

I measured it again just now, internally it looks to be 9X14.5 or very close to that.

Yeah I actually think its probably 18 in^2/cube.
