I just bought a 2020 (pre-beaver) BMW 430i convertible. I was NOT impressed with the Harmon system, but after a test drive in a car with it, the standard system sounds even worse! So it is probably worth my time to take this apart and upgrade it. I listen at medium loud levels, and value clarity - I am not looking to shake the neighborhood with bass and I am not looking to damage my battery or electrical components. I want a minimal DIY replacement with higher quality parts for increased clarity.
I had a few questions:
1) It seems like I have 2 tweeters on the top of each door, 2 mids in each door, 2 subs under each front seat and 2 more woofers and tweeters in the back - along with an amp in the trunk. This is just going by what's online - I haven't taken the car apart or even tried to examine it carefully. Is this correct? Going by what's online, upgrading my door speakers is the biggest bang for the buck - is that correct? Taking apart the doors seems like a relatively large risk and large amount of work compared to everything else.
2) For door speakers, I see several stand alone woofers, along with coaxial woofer/tweeters being sold. Are the stock door speakers near the handle just woofers? Are the coaxial speakers meant to eliminate the tweeters higher up? Any advice which configuration works best?
3) If I am looking for increased clarity without increased volume, is there any point to upgrading either the amp or subwoofers?
4) Are there any good sites listing and/or comparing options?
5) Should I add damping material if I do open my doors? What kind and how much?
