Big three -> Alt. to battery question

I'm getting ready to upgrade my alt. to battery wire from 8 gauge to 1/0. I have a couple questions about it. First, do I need to fuse/circut breaker both ends of the wire? I heard the battery could explode if you didn't fuse the end closest to your battery. I'm not sure if I have any room to put a breaker/fuse on the engine. Second, would breakers or fuses be better? I'm thinking I'm going to use a 200 amp breaker or a 250 amp fuse. The alternator I'm going to install is 170amp so 200amp breaker shouldn't pop unless there is a short. One of the nice things about breakers is they cost about the same as a nice fuse holder/fuse. Also, if something bad happens while I'm on the freeway I could just reset the breaker vs trying to find a high amp fuse.

    1. both ends, no

    ^^^

what he said. You only need one fuse in the positive lead, and circuit breakers have a habit of tripping when you don't want them to. Fuses don't have that problem.

Re: Big three -> Alt. to battery question

Thanks, this was a good little lesson. It kind of ***** that I already have 4 circut breakers for my audio stuff. After they break more than 14 times or after about 8 years I'll replace them with fuses. I'll use a fuse to my alt. Thanks again.

Re: Big three -> Alt. to battery question

hopefully, you shouldn't have to worry about your main power wire fuse blowing if you've sized it correctly for your amp draw. If it still blows, it's telling you you've got problems somewhere else...

Re: Big three -> Alt. to battery question

it looks like fuses are better but i kinda like circut breakers because i dont have to spend so much money on fuses. i mean yes they may not pop as much as a circut breakers. but when im say changin aroun amp all i need to do is push the button n change the wire. then reset the circut breaker n im good to go.
i find it alot easier for me, imo.
