dash lights turn off when headlights turn on, after installing head unit

So ive installed a few head units before and am trying to talk my friend though it on the phone.
He has a pionder deh 8300ub. There is an orange/white wire comming off of the headunit and in the manual it says to connect it to "lighting switch terminal". Off of the wiring harness there is an orange/white wire and a solid orange wire. The solid orange wire is the illumination wire, and the orange white wire is the dimmer wire according to the instructions on the metra kit. Which wires do we connect together? I told him to do orange/white to orange/white but then the dash lights dont come on. When he connects solid orange to orange/white. the dash lights will come on but once he turns the headlights on they go off

what kind of car is it because if its an install kit that has some dash lights on it then you will need to wire it differently than to one without the kit with dash lights

Metra Orange (illumination) to Pioneer Orange (illumination)
Metra Orange/Black (dimmer to Pioneer Orange/White (dimmer)
