500watts @2ohm or 500watts @4ohm
Ok, so as of right now I am running 2 10" JBL subwoofers off of a (two channel) kenwood amp. Each speaker is receiving 250watts RMS at 2ohms. It sounds great but the amp gets super hot. So I am looking at purchasing an MTX monoblock class D amp that can put out 500watts RMS at 4ohms. So I would be receiving the same amount of wattage but at the different ohm rating. Here is my question, I was wondering since the speakers will be receiving the same amount of wattage will they pretty much sound the same minus the different amp settings. Like will they have the same loudness/power and punch that I currently have and like?
Re: 500watts @2ohm or 500watts @4ohm
What voice coil and model are your subs?
Also, exactly what amp are you using now?
Re: 500watts @2ohm or 500watts @4ohm
I have two JBL GT5-10D - they are 4ohm DVC subs
The amp I currently have is a Kenwood KAC-7203
Re: 500watts @2ohm or 500watts @4ohm
I would say it'd be better just because I don't trust Kenwood amps

This is a crazy good deal for 500 watts @ 2 ohms.

Re: 500watts @2ohm or 500watts @4ohm
That is a great deal Av however I couldn't run it at 2ohm. I can only wire my subs to 1 or 4 ohm on a mono amp... Plus i am picking up the MTX amp for 40 bucks through a friend.

Reading> me.
Sorry about that. That mtx sounds like it should work great.

Probably, i'm just biased against Kenwood amp
Re: 500watts @2ohm or 500watts @4ohm
The short answer is 'yes'. The subs should sound relatively the same. If its a MTX class D(usually optimized for 2ohm operation) running it at 4ohm will most likely result in lower THD and much better thermal conditions for the amp.

Lol, I am too, actually. I wouldn't run 98% of the amps they've manufactured. But these newer Excelon amps are very nice. And it was a craigslist steal. :-)

Here's the current excelon lineup
Kenwood - Amplifiers
Mine
Kenwood - XR-4S
The XR's (I don't know anything about the older X's) are tiny and heavy. Literally feels like you are holding a brick. Gobs of clean power, and nice crossovers. I run my front comps active off of it.
Like I said, lol..

I'm sending an old Zed autotek model 88 to be repaired (by zed) next week. It'll be my first taste of Mantz's stuff.
