I think you should buy a amp, subwoofer , wiring, and a box - it is not that hard and you will have something that would sound good for a long time.

A $300 budget would get you something that you would really be happy with.

It is in a small reg cab pickup. I didn't want anything pounding, just something to fill out the lower end. This was a good option because of how little space it took up.

If the unit is really broken, I will probably pull it apart and have a look.

I wish there was a more conclusive test I could do.

Well there are more test you can do.
Either the internal amp or the sub is broken.
If you want it would not be hard to either replace the bad sub with a new one or replace the amp with an external one.
Do you have a DMM (multi-meter)?

OK pull the sub out, disconnect it from the amp, check for resistance across the speaker wire terminals.

Should be 4 ohms most likely

most likely the amp in the box is bad.

However it really just isn't worth trying to make work.

You would be 10x happier with this setup

and a cheap $50 amp. I have sold 2 amps in the last year or so that would have worked good for you both for less than $50 each.

Buy that kicker box from above and post a WTB in the classifieds here on this site for a cheap amp and you will be much happier.

It ***** that you wasted your money on that setup but take it as a lesson learned.
