Stock alternator is not throwing out what a DC 270XP would either. Sure, you're not going to see all of that amperage going to the back, but it's possible to see 200A easily, plus amperage from the battery if he's drawing from that. It adds up to a possibility of drawing more than that single wire can handle. That's why we fuse, and yeah it's only a small chance, but personally I do not want to take that chance.
Call it insurance man, I'd rather pay for another run of wire than a full car. Maybe that's just me.
