It won't hurt anything but realize the power handling is halved.

I use gain as a volume control.

As long as you send it clean (unclipped) power it is perfectly fine. But I'd still get a proper amp for it & run both.

I use gain as a volume control.

Not only is power halved, but it throws off all the T/S parameters as well.

T/S aren't meant to be taken too literally anyways seeing as how they are measured using like 1w of power

Sub won't perform properly and power handling is halved. It's half *** but you can limp by with it short term until you make arrangements to do it right.

Re: Can I hook up only 1 voice coil from a dual voice coil sub?

its not bad for the sub, per se, but it will half your sub's power handling, as other's have stated. also, the Qts of the driver will change, resulting in a peakier response near the driver's resonant frequency. you can short the other coil to counteract that peakiness. honestly, though, with the exception of some specialized applications, there's no good reason to drive only one voice coil. you're essentially limiting the sub's performance capabilities by half.
