sub cuts out at higher volume

recently i've had my sub cut off after a period of time while in use. i found out that the terminal connection the inside of my speaker box to the outside was faulty so i hardwired my sub to my amp and it worked. but now my sub will only play after i've started my car and if i keep the volume relatively low, or if the sub isn't in heavy use. i've recently ran new rca's from the back of my head unit. My amp has been apart a few times from when the metal clip popped out of the rca terminal because the old rca tip broke off inside and pushed said metal clip out. I don't know if the loss of heat sync paste from taking apart the amp has anything to contribute to the problem or not. also my power wire and ground wire aren't as heavy as they should be and my ground wire is grounded to the battery, i don't know if any of this has potential to be the cause of my problem but maybe it helps.

Re: sub cuts out at higher volume

If you have one or have access to one get a dmm (fluke, greenlee, walmart or auto parts store brand multimeter) and use to it start checking for possible problems... if you stick around audio and come to love it enough you will make good friends w/ it

Re: sub cuts out at higher volume

i should probably invest in one, i'll be troubleshooting soon on my day off starting with a different sub to isolate the problems, i'm unsure as to whether it could be a channel on the amp shorting out or what, but a multimeter will help.

Re: sub cuts out at higher volume

If your cutting out at high volumes it can be many things, broken tensil leads on the sub, amp being overused, too low impedance, not to mention things rattling loose if it gets that loud. could even be maybe a broken fuse or fuse holder. does the amp turn off or go into protect?

Re: sub cuts out at higher volume

the amp gain is low, and it doesn't go into protect mode, the power light stays on and the amp doesn't smell, all my fuses are ok and intact.

Re: sub cuts out at higher volume

I'm guessing it's your ground. If you're running something smaller than 4 gauge and are running that ground wire all the way to the battery, there's a good chance that a proper ground will fix the issue. Either way, pick up the multimeter(I spent like $20 on mine from walmart and I can't tell you how helpful it's been).

the battery is in the trunk with the sub and amp, but yes it is smaller than 4 gauge, it does need to bigger but it is only two and a half to three feet long.
