    question about what size fuse

i plan on running 2 1001 bd rockford amps and both say they need 100 amp fuses. i got 2 gauge going to the trunk with a distrobution block with 2 100 amp anl fuses. So i was wondering what size fuse to use under the hood? do i still stick 100 amp? and has anybody ever used circuit breakers? are they better than fuses?

Re: question about what size fuse

You're actually pushing the limits of 2 ga wire, but since we're talking about music (I'm assuming) and not test tones all the time I think you're fine.
You should use at most a 200A fuse at the battery, if not something a little smaller - 175 maybe. It's not an exact science - a fuse won't blow the second it sees it's rated current. It takes time for the fuse to melt and pop. Generally a fuse can pass double its rated current for a few seconds before it blows. 175A instead of 200A would just give you a little bit higher factor of safety in the case of a short.

Fuse breakers will work, but they are mechanical and have a lot higher rate of malfunction. Plus, I believe they DO trip at the instant they try to pass their rated current.

should i upgrade my wire to 1 guage going to the trunk? I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but could i use 2 fuses under the hood or not? I'm trying to be cautious on what fuse to use cause i already fried an amp before from a power surge.

Re: question about what size fuse

Yea you could use two fuses. To double the fuse rating, take two fuse holders and parallel them. Something like this....
    ----fuseholder----
    -----l l-------------
    ----fuseholder----

I know this isnt very good but its as good as I could think.

With this configuration, if both the fuses were 100 amps then the final amperage of the whole thing would be 200 amps. At least I think. But im pretty sure that would be correct.

Nevermind, it wont work, it keeps scrunching it all together, but just take the two fuseholders and place them in between the ---l l----, where the l's stand for something like t-off's.
