    question on gains and input voltage

    my amps input voltage goes from 150mv-8v....my hu has 4v preouts....if i wanted to keep the gain all the way down, would i set it to 150mv or 8v?

    Why ? That's what the gain is for. To match the input voltage to the output voltage of the head unit .

    yea i know...but i want to keep the gains down because my amp is a little too powerful for my sub

    What is it reducing then? THe elevated voltage that card audio now has 4v - 8v outputs are designed to decrease noise that is caused from the car environment, but a downfall is it automatically increases distortion according to articles I have read. The best voltage to combat both fairly effectively is the use of 2v preamp outs.

    It's reducing the sensitivity. Ever notice when you turn the gains down. You have to turn the volume up louder on the head unit. That's what the gains do. adjust the input sensitivity

    I was asking myself the question what gains do. Then I answered with the statement of their purpose. Sorry for any confusion.
