Hooking up Power wire to amp without d/c battery

Do I need to disconnect the battery before I plug the power wire into my sub amp? I did it before without d/c it and it sparked, everything was fine but do I risk blowing a fuse by not d/cing the battery?

Re: Hooking up Power wire to amp without d/c battery

if you leave the abtt connect the wire will spark when you connect it to the amplifier....if you disconnect it the wire at the batt will spark when reconnected.....so no it does not matter

It is stupid to ever have your battery negative connected when messing with your electrical. Not only can it damage your equipment, you can possibly shock yourself. Always remove your negative.

Re: Hooking up Power wire to amp without d/c battery

The only sure way of never blowing your electronics while installing, is to disconnect the battery ground. That's why every amplifier manual I've ever read instructs you to do so.

Most people don't do this because it takes a few more minutes and they're lazy.

I was one of these people until I blew out an Orion amp in the 90's. Now I spend the extra couple of minutes.

Re: Hooking up Power wire to amp without d/c battery

i never disconnect the battery when i have to disconnect my amps or head unit or w/e. i just d/c the ground from the amp, then d/c the positive from the amp and just tape up the exposed positive wire with electrical tape. then continue doing w/e i need to do.

i will not put **** or outside links in my signature again. if i do i will be banned. all hail the moderators.

Re: Hooking up Power wire to amp without d/c battery

All I want to do is switch out the amps to test my new one. Then I am going to put the old one back in. I guess I should just unplug it to be safe

How is that any better or even faster than just disconnecting your battery ground and doing it right to begin with? Seems like an awful lot of extra work for nothing.

Ground comes off first and goes on last. The idea is to never touch your positive line while it is grounded due to the potential of a shock hazard. You can't get shocked touching your negative.

No, bad advice. Read the first installation step on this link:

    http://www.ehow.com/how_3680_install-car-amplifier.html

I LOL at everyone who thinks they know more than the EE's who write amp installation instructions and tell people it's o.k. to work on an energized electrical system.
