    How to tell if a Capacitor is good ?

    hey guys...my friend is selling his stinger capacitor...i figure i would buy it and see what it can do for me
    it looks kinda old...but he says it works...it is not connected...it is the white one with the digital monitor

    how can i test if it is good ?

    No capacitor is good...

    hey that's another thing...does radioshack sell voltmeters that i can mount on my dash to monitor my voltage ?

    Well, maybe ask him to try it out...hook it up, see if there is still a drop. Hooking it up will take 5 minutes.

    ok i'll do that...but he doesn't have the resistor to charge it

    a bulb will work ?

    Try charging it and then do the test you use for a 9 v battery, put your tongue across the terminals.

    Huh? Do you know what a cap is for? If not, don't use one.

    You can test a cap by charging it up to 12 V off your battery (use a light bulb or resistor), then put a load on it and time how long it takes to discharge. There should be more than 37% of the voltage you started with after 1 time-constant.

    t = R*C

    ex. 1 time constant for 1 farad with a 100 ohm load = 100 seconds. So after 100 seconds there should be at least .37 x 12 = 4.44 volts on the cap.

    yes i know what a cap is for...i was just saying that i have a slight volage drop...and wanted to know what i can do correct it ?

    the reason for buying it is because he is selling it cheap because he did a totally new install...so i was jus thinking i can add it to my system...
