Re: >>>Engine whine and ground loop fixes... take two

    Greetings,

I've got the same thing going here guys/gals, I've got a Pioneer Premier DEH-P500UB H/U my sweet girl got it for me on my birthday, its a sweet deck.
Had it for almost 2 yrs now, warranty is almost up, and one day, it started whining after an install..Like most of you out there, I grounded and regrounded everything, removed paint, drilled new holes, even up graded Cables..Nothing seemed to work. hell I even isoliated the whole H/U...Now i more or less stumbled a crossed this thread, and I have to hand it to you guys, I freaking worked. I had every kind of buzz, whine, thump, pop, you could think of. Now Its as quiet as a sleeping baby.

Took some remote wire I had around, and grounded my RCAs, and I grounded the deck straight to the batt. Perfecto!!!!!

So, Thanks, you saved me a buttload of frustration, time and money.

I don't think that is just Pioneer HU's that have this problem. I have a Kenwood HU and mine has started to have engine whine. I'm going to try this tomorrow and see if it works. Hope it does I've tried all of the other grounds. I post after it's done

ok so I tried this fix on my deck but ran into a problem. My RCA's arnt hard mounted into the deck, they have a length of cord coming out of the back of the deck. Is there away to ground these or am I S.O.L.?

just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the pointers listed on here. long with the big3 i just completed, i also upgraded my HU's ground and also grounded the RCAs. absolutely noticable.

the only thing i have yet to try is running power/rcas on different sides of the car. like the op said, i also have heard like half and half... some say don't worry about it, some people say absolutely do this.

Re: >>>Engine whine and ground loop fixes... take two

Can someone email me back on this?
I purchased a DEH-23UB for my wifes 02 toyota highlander, she has a factory amp somewhere in there so i have to get a wireing harness to accomadate the one plug harness and it has only RCA plugs to go into the pre outs of my HU.

I have the terrible whine and static.
I tryed the wrapping of the RCA's which did not work.
My questions are: Is this suppost to work when you are also using those RCA pre outs?
and I realize by looking at other photos I may have done it wrong.
I started with the little screw directly by the RCA plugs, wraped the two L and R inputs and back to the same screw... I did not send the wire off of the RCA plate (mount)... do I simply need to send this wire away form the RCA plugs or should this have worked?

    Someone please let me know,

Ground loops and engine whine cause common problems such as a high-pitched whine that varies with engine RPM's, various thumps while changing tracks, turn on/off thumps, etc.

There are various protective measures to take in order to decrease the likelihood of experiencing engine whine and ground loops.
    • Shielded RCA's
A good pair of shielded RCA's may be the easiest way to avoid engine noise. Don't use patch cables or other el-cheap-o RCA's that are unshielded. I'm not saying you need to invest a small fortune in RCA cables, just make sure they are shielded.
    • Proper head unit ground
This is perhaps the most common source of engine noise. Many times factory head unit grounds are poor. Relocating the ground wire or adding to the existing one will help reduce or eliminate ground loops.
    • Proper amplifier ground
If none of the above have worked, check the ground for the amplifier. Make sure it is grounded to the frame, battery, or other substantial metal surface. Make sure the metal is good 'ol fashioned detroit iron. Many cars use metallic alloys or composites that aren't very conductive. Avoid those at all costs.
    • Wire routing
Some claim this next fix is BS, and others swear by their grave that it works. But run your RCA's and power wires at least 18" apart. I route my RCA's on one side of the car, and power on the other. Couldn't hurt.
    • Grounding the RCA's on the head unit
Many have had problems with Pioneer head units because of a poor internal RCA ground. To remedy this, simply wrap wire around the RCA's and screw the wire down to the head unit's chassis like so:

Thanks to Ultimate157 for the image.

Please note: While ground loop isolators are tempting to use as a quick fix, I generally don't advise people to use them because they simply cover up the problem instead of solving it. Only use ground loop isolators as a final resort is none of the above fixes work.

    Enjoy
does this RCA remedy work with all pioneer decks?

Adding a second Kinetik batt and grounding the shit out of it (grounding to frame AND block) did it for me...didn't have too much whine, but when I added the second battery, voila! Good, solid grounding of the electrical system is key IMHO.

5 years later and that radio is still kicking around, with the same exact wire around the RCAs. Currently installed and running in one of my vehicles.
